Life Vac - Truth or Myth

Our instructors at Sharalife are often asked about the LifeVac device in our First Aid courses. During our certificated First Aid and CPR courses we teach Canadian Red Cross and Heart and Stroke courses. Neither of these providers talk about the LifeVac at this time. Not in a positive or negative manner. They just do not even make mention that it exists at all. We do have a LifeVac family pack available to check out at our facilities for those interested.

So is this device really life saving or is it just a gimmick? That is the question we usually get asked about the LifeVac. Our answer is yes to both. If you purchase the actual LifeVac with the PATENTED one-way valve system that is designed to prevent air from entering a choking victim on the downward motion, then, it could be a life saving device. The LifeVac Canada Inc official site has testimonies of successful uses of the LifeVac which makes it a life saving device in my opinion. But, yes to the gimmick side if you purchase a much cheaper knock off of the original LifeVac which more than likely will NOT have the one-way valve system and therefore is just a bright colored toilet plunger. Yes, you might find a knock off for a quarter of the price of the original LifeVac but in a life and death situation the small amount of money saved will not be consolation for the failure. It is fair to mention that both Sharalife and LifeVac suggest this device is an option once current choking protocols have been followed and attempted without success. The LifeVac website states that their device has saved thousands of lives during choking emergencies. Hard to argue with that!
